Police have intensified CCTV monitoring on all expressways to crack down on speeding during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year travel rush, with officers also stationed at expressway entrances to enforce traffic regulations.

DIG W.P.J. Senadheera, head of Traffic Control and Road Safety, announced the measures as millions travel across the island for Avurudu celebrations. The law will be “strictly enforced” against dangerous driving, he warned.

A dedicated WhatsApp number — 070 4755600 — has been introduced for the public to submit footage of traffic violations, enabling citizens to report reckless driving directly to police.

The DIG urged both drivers and pedestrians to take necessary precautions during the peak travel period running from April 12 to 16. The measures come after six people were killed in pre-Avurudu road accidents in recent days, and as the SLTB deployed over 1,490 buses to manage the holiday transport surge.
