The Department of Prisons has arranged special open visits for inmates to mark the Sinhala-Tamil New Year, with family visits permitted on April 13 and 14 across all prisons island-wide.

Prisons Commissioner A.C. Gajanayake announced the arrangement, which is being implemented in line with departmental guidelines at every correctional facility in the country.

Under the special provisions, relatives may provide each inmate with a parcel of food or sweets and a separate parcel containing sanitary items in adequate quantities.

The Avurudu visit arrangement is a longstanding tradition that allows incarcerated individuals to maintain family bonds during the most significant cultural holiday in the Sri Lankan calendar. Similar arrangements are typically made during Vesak and the December festive season.
