Former Sri Lankan cricketer Muthumudalige Pushpakumara has been appointed head coach of the China national cricket team, Newswire reported on Thursday.

The appointment adds Pushpakumara to a growing list of Sri Lankan cricket figures who have taken on coaching and development roles in ICC Associate nations as the global body pushes cricket into markets beyond the traditional Full Member circuit. China has held ICC Associate status for more than a decade but has seen limited breakthrough at the senior men’s level.

Details of the contract length and start date were not immediately released. Pushpakumara has worked within Sri Lankan cricket’s domestic coaching structure in recent years.

The move is a rare senior international coaching appointment for a Sri Lankan in the Asian cricket development pathway. Sri Lanka Cricket has not yet issued a public statement on the appointment.
