Former monk Rajangane Saddharathana — who had been expelled from the Buddhist monastic order — was assaulted by two unidentified masked men on June 6, police confirmed on Saturday.
The two attackers arrived at the scene in a van, assaulted the victim and fled, police said. The injured former monk was admitted to hospital for treatment. The motive for the attack and the identities of the assailants have not yet been established, and investigations are ongoing.
Saddharathana had previously been arrested by the CCID on May 8 over alleged social-media remarks targeting Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala, the Inspector General of Police and a Senior DIG. He had been operating a YouTube channel known for outspoken political commentary before his expulsion from the order.
