A 10-year-old schoolgirl was killed after being run over by a bus on Hendala Thotupola Road in Mattakkuliya on Thursday, April 10.

According to Ada Derana, the girl had alighted from the bus and was attempting to cross the road when she was struck by the same vehicle. She sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead upon admission to the National Hospital of Colombo.

The victim was a resident of the Mattakkuliya area. The bus driver has been arrested and Mattakkuliya Police are conducting an investigation into the incident.

The fatal accident comes during the school holiday period ahead of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, a time when road traffic volumes typically spike across the country as families travel to their home provinces.

Road safety remains a persistent concern in Sri Lanka, with bus accidents involving pedestrians โ€” particularly children โ€” frequently reported in urban areas with heavy traffic and narrow roadways.
