The Seethawakapura Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) has instructed officers in the division to withdraw only their entitled amount after a banking oversight credited May 2026 food, beverage and accommodation allowances twice into officers’ accounts.
In a written notice issued to District Officers, Headquarters Police Inspectors and Officers-in-Charge across the division, the SSP said officers should leave the excess funds untouched while the bank takes steps to recover the surplus. Officers were directed to claim only the regular allowance to which they are entitled.
Ada Derana reported the duplicate credit occurred due to an oversight by the bank during the May payment cycle. Officers who choose to access the surplus despite the standing instruction could face accountability action once the recovery process is complete.

The incident follows a separate banking error at People’s Bank that resulted in a Rs. 656 million remittance loss disclosed earlier this year, highlighting recurring payment-system vulnerabilities in Sri Lanka’s public sector financial operations.
