Police arrested seven suspects in two separate raids on the night of April 25 in connection with the possession of counterfeit currency, with one operation also uncovering the synthetic stimulant βIceβ, Newswire reported.
The Mount Lavinia Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau conducted the first raid in the Ratmalana and Imbulgoda areas, taking six suspects into custody. Officers seized 91 grams and 200 milligrams of crystal methamphetamine, along with two counterfeit Rs. 5,000 notes and 21 counterfeit Rs. 2,000 notes. The detained men, aged 25, 29, 30, 32, 35 and 52, are residents of Imbulgoda, Dehipitiya, Pelenda and Ratmalana, and have been handed over to the Mount Lavinia Police Station.
In a parallel operation the same night, Kohuwala Police arrested a 56-year-old Wellawatte resident in the Dehiwala area in possession of five counterfeit Rs. 5,000 notes and 38 counterfeit Rs. 2,000 notes. The combined haul comes to 7 fake Rs. 5,000 notes and 59 fake Rs. 2,000 notes β a face value of Rs. 153,000 in counterfeit currency.
The two seizures fall under the wider Rata Ekata anti-narcotics drive, under which police have logged 156,456 arrests and recovered 1,917 kilograms of heroin since October 2025. Investigations into both operations are continuing.
