A severed human head was found washed ashore on the beach behind a popular tourist hotel in Moragalla, Aluthgama, on Saturday morning, Ada Derana reported.

Officers from the Aluthgama Police visited the scene after receiving a telephone call alerting them to the discovery on 23 May. Police said the remains have been identified as those of a male, but the identity of the deceased has not yet been established.

Aluthgama Police are conducting further investigations.

The Moragalla stretch is one of the country’s better-known tourist beach corridors on the southwestern coast, immediately south of the Bentota resort zone.
