The Colombo Magistrate’s Court on Monday ordered that the case against Shashi Weerawansa — wife of former minister and National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa — be taken up again on July 24, Ada Derana reported.
Weerawansa, who is out on bail, faces allegations that she obtained a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents.
The case had previously been adjourned from May 11 to May 25 over a dispute about access to evidence. At that hearing, defence counsel told the court he wished to inspect the computer system used to generate the electronic documents at the centre of the prosecution’s case before the examination of witnesses began, arguing that access had not been provided under the Evidence Ordinance. The magistrate had directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to clarify whether the defence would be granted that access.
The adjournment came on the same day Shashi Weerawansa’s husband was arrested over a separate confrontation at the National War Heroes Memorial and granted Rs. 500,000 bail, one of several legal threads involving the Weerawansa household.
