Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Anura Withanage, presented his Letters of Credence to Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the Presidential Palace in Beirut on May 6. Ambassador Withanage was received with ceremonial honours, including a Guard of Honour and the playing of both national anthems.

Withanage conveyed greetings from President Anura Kumara Disanayake and reiterated Sri Lanka’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties with Lebanon. The discussions focused on cooperation in trade, investment and people-to-people engagement, with President Aoun welcoming further dialogue on the expansion of economic ties.

Withanage formally assumed duties at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Beirut on April 6 at a time of heightened regional tension. His credentialing now provides a formal channel for engagement at the head-of-state level under President Aoun, who took office in January 2025 after a more than two-year presidential vacancy in Lebanon.

Lebanon remains a significant destination for Sri Lankan migrant workers, predominantly in domestic service, and the embassy continues to handle consular work alongside bilateral policy. Beirut has been a focal point of Sri Lankan diplomatic activity throughout the year as the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire framework has shaped Colombo’s evacuation and welfare planning for its overseas community.
