Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Colombo Municipal Council member Deepa Edirisinghe has resigned from her seat on the council.

Edirisinghe said the resignation was made in line with a commitment she gave when she accepted the position โ€” that she would step down after one year. Speaking to Ada Derana, she said that while she has left the council role, she will continue to take part in the activities of the SLFP Central Committee.

The party is expected to nominate a new member to fill the vacancy on the Colombo Municipal Council. The name of the incoming councillor will be formally announced through a Gazette notification once the nomination is made.

Such rotation arrangements are not new to the SLFP; the party has seen similar resignations before and treats them as part of its internal process for sharing council positions among its representatives.

The Colombo Municipal Council, the countryโ€™s largest local authority, has been the site of repeated political friction since the 2025 local government elections, and party seat-sharing deals have shaped its composition.
