The Sri Lanka Social Security Board says members of the public can now register for its social security pension schemes from home using a mobile phone, under a newly expanded digital service platform.

The Board said the initiative aims to make access to social security services more efficient and convenient through its online portal, www.socialsecurity.lk. It added that a range of pension and social security schemes carrying broader public benefits had also been introduced for easier access by citizens across the country.

According to the Board, the retirement plans are designed to provide financial protection not only for the contributor but also for their family. Benefits include a lifetime monthly pension, pension support for spouses, financial assistance in the event of unexpected death or disability, and grants for children’s education and other needs.

The Sri Lanka Social Security Board was established under Act No. 17 of 1996, later amended by Act No. 33 of 1999, to provide pensions and social security benefits to individuals who are not entitled to a government pension — primarily self-employed people and workers in the informal sector.

The move sits alongside a wider push to broaden retirement coverage in Sri Lanka, including a phase-two revision of public-sector pensions due in July, a contributory scheme launched for tea estate workers, and enhanced benefits for the families of war veterans.
