The second ODI between Sri Lanka and West Indies at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica was abandoned due to rain on Saturday, leaving the tourists 1-0 up in the three-match series with one game still to play.

West Indies captain Shai Hope had won the toss and elected to bowl first, with the toss itself delayed by 30 minutes after early-morning showers, Ada Derana reported. Hope’s decision to field first was influenced by overcast conditions and the possibility of further weather interruptions throughout the day. Drizzle returned moments before the scheduled first ball and persistent rain prevented play.

The wash-out comes after Sri Lanka opened the tour with a 41-run victory in the first ODI at the same venue on Tuesday, the country’s first ODI win in the Caribbean since 2013. The hosts needed to win at Sabina Park to level the series.

The result locks in a 1-0 series lead for Sri Lanka heading into the third and final ODI, with West Indies now unable to reach more than 1-1 in the bilateral series. A Sri Lanka win or wash-out in the third ODI will deliver a series victory; West Indies must win to share it.

Sri Lanka were fined for a slow over-rate in the first ODI, with the ICC docking the team 10 percent of their match fee. The over-rate clock did not run during Saturday’s abandoned game.

The Sri Lanka squad is touring under the new Mendis–Kirsten era, with Kusal Mendis having taken over the white-ball leadership group for the Caribbean assignment.
