The management of the 1990 Emergency Ambulance Service — Suwa Seriya — has dismissed circulating social media reports claiming the service had been deactivated, stressing that operations are continuing uninterrupted across Sri Lanka.
In a statement, the Board of Directors, including the Chairman, described the social media posts as “completely false” and misleading to the public, Newswire reported. They emphasised that Suwa Seriya remains fully functional nationwide, delivering services in the usual manner and with improved efficiency.
Management further assured that the emergency ambulance service will continue to operate without disruption in the future.
The free, 24-hour 1990 service — now a familiar fixture for cardiac emergencies, road accidents and maternity calls — has expanded steadily since its 2016 launch. The denial comes against a backdrop of broader policy debate over Sri Lanka’s emergency response architecture, including a parliamentary exchange in which State Minister Dr Harsha de Silva contrasted the responsiveness of the 1990 hotline with the 119 police emergency number. Suwa Seriya has also recently consolidated its operational base with the opening of a new Colombo headquarters.
