Police have arrested two Tajik nationals in possession of US$ 5,200 in counterfeit notes after a tip-off received by the Unawatuna Police Tourist Division on Thursday morning, Newswire reported.
The suspects, aged 27 and 26, were taken into custody at a lodge in Galle. Officers also seized genuine foreign currency and five mobile phones during the operation. The fake dollars are valued at around Rs. 1.7 million.
Investigators say the two men had attempted to rent motorcycles from a business in Unawatuna catering to foreigners by paying in counterfeit dollars. After the rental shop reported the suspicious notes, police tracked the suspects down at their lodge and made the arrests.
The two are scheduled to be produced before the Galle Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
