Two police constables attached to the Teldeniya Police Station have been arrested over an alleged assault on two residents of Gomagoda, Elamalpotha, The Island reported.

The assault took place in the Orutota area within the Teldeniya police division. The victims were admitted to Teldeniya Base Hospital and Kandy National Hospital with serious injuries. Police said the condition of one victim was so severe that a statement could not yet be recorded from him, and hospital sources described the patient at Kandy National Hospital as remaining critical.

Superintendent of Police (SP I) for Teldeniya Jayantha Samarakoon said the two constables were arrested on suspicion and will be produced before the Teldeniya Magistrate. The Teldeniya Police Headquarters is conducting further investigations under the supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police Prageeth Buddhika Samarapala and SP Samarakoon.

The arrests follow the detention of nine civilians on April 20 over a viral-video assault in Gokarella. Unlike that case, the Teldeniya incident is an intra-police accountability matter, with officers from the same station facing arrest over alleged violence against residents.
