Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva met India’s Deputy High Commissioner in Colombo, Dr. Satyanjal Pandey, at the party headquarters on Tuesday (June 2) in what was Pandey’s final official engagement before the end of his three-year diplomatic posting, Newswire reported.
The two discussed recent measures taken to strengthen bilateral ties between Sri Lanka and India, with Silva acknowledging Pandey’s contribution to the relationship over the course of his tenure. Silva specifically cited India’s assistance to families displaced by Cyclone Ditwah, where New Delhi committed to expediting USD 450 million in support for recovery and reconstruction work in the worst-hit districts.
Silva extended best wishes to Pandey as he prepares to depart Colombo after completing his diplomatic duties.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of an unusually intense year of Sri Lanka-India engagement. Beyond the cyclone recovery track, the two governments have managed a steady cadence of fisheries, energy and connectivity dossiers, while New Delhi has hosted regular bilateral consultations as the NPP government continues its post-IMF stabilisation. Pandey’s exit follows the standard rotation pattern at the Indian mission and the identity of his successor has not yet been publicly announced.
The JVP is the lead constituent of the ruling National People’s Power (NPP) coalition. Silva himself has been one of the party’s most senior political voices through the past year, surfacing in recent weeks across coal commission proceedings and discussions on the eventual provincial council elections.
