Sri Lanka received 54,465 international tourist arrivals between June 1 and June 16, taking the 2026 year-to-date total past 1.076 million, according to Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) data cited by Ada Derana.
India retained its top-source-market position with 21,839 arrivals, accounting for 40.0% of mid-June visitors. The next four markets were the United Kingdom with 4,160, China with 3,503, Australia with 3,105 and Bangladesh with 1,813. June 2026 arrivals through the halfway mark were tracking well below the 138,241 recorded for the full month of June 2025 — a comparison that reflects the season’s traditional drop relative to the December–April peak rather than a discrete shock, with the second-half pickup typically driven by school-holiday and Indian Ocean regional travel.
Year-to-date 2026 arrivals through June 16 stood at 1,076,487, the SLTDA said. India led the cumulative table with 272,099, followed by the United Kingdom on 102,253 and Russia on 76,686. The threshold of one million arrivals was passed in late May for the second consecutive year, with the country logging 145,745 arrivals in May alone — up 9.65% year-on-year.
The June running total sits within the projected band for the southwest-monsoon shoulder period, when European leisure markets thin out and Indian and Indian-Ocean regional travel become the dominant source channels. Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath has previously noted that the second half typically rebuilds momentum through the post-October arrivals window, with the industry targeting an annual full-year close above three million arrivals.
The SLTDA’s preliminary mid-month reading is unaudited and may be revised when the full June dataset is published in early July. The agency typically releases its definitive monthly breakdown — including spend, length of stay and accommodation segmentation — within the first two weeks of the following month.
