The Port of Trincomalee carried out the first simultaneous triple vessel operation in its history at the Ashroff Jetty terminal on Sunday, handling three cargoes at once and expecting to generate more than Rs. 300 million in revenue from the single window, NewsFirst reported.
Trincomalee Port Resident Manager Sarath Kumara said the operation marks an operational milestone for the deep-water harbour, which has historically handled vessels one at a time at Ashroff Jetty.
The bulk carrier AAL BANGKOK is at one of the jetty berths discharging five wind turbine towers consigned to the Mannar wind power complex, part of the renewables build-out that the Cabinet has accelerated alongside the 150MW Kondachchi wind-and-storage tender. A second vessel, HAI LONG 1, arrived from Dubai carrying 17,000 tonnes of steel construction rods brought into Sri Lanka for re-export. The third, UNIWELL, is unloading 55,000 tonnes of Indonesian coal for the Sri Lanka Cement Corporation.
The simultaneous handling is operationally significant for Trincomalee, which has been promoted by successive governments as a transhipment and regional logistics hub but has long trailed Colombo on throughput. Trincomalee has been a focus of recent bilateral energy and infrastructure discussions with India and the UAE and figures in the wider Rs. 2 billion port investment programme flagged by SLPA Chairman Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake at the recent Sri Lanka–Germany Business Forum.
