Two motorcyclists were killed in unrelated road accidents in Athurugiriya and Matale on Saturday, police told Newswire.
In the Athurugiriya incident, a 48-year-old man from Panagoda lost control of his motorcycle after a dog suddenly crossed the Athurugiriya–Godagama Road in Panagoda. He fell from the bike and was admitted to Homagama Hospital with injuries but later died.
In the second incident, on the A9 highway in Matale, a 74-year-old motorcyclist from Nalanda was killed instantly when his bike collided with a lorry transporting LP gas cylinders. A four-year-old child travelling with him was admitted to Matale Hospital for treatment.
Police are investigating both accidents. The two deaths add to a sustained pattern of weekend motorcycle fatalities that prompted the National Council for Road Safety to flag the June 19 expressway-enforcement deadline earlier on Sunday and the Transport Ministry to push its target of significantly reducing road accidents and deaths by 2029.
