A Ugandan national was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) after customs officials discovered cocaine hidden in her clothing during a routine inspection.
The arrest, reported on Sunday, is the latest in a series of drug interceptions at Sri Lanka’s main international gateway. Details on the exact quantity seized and the suspect’s travel route have not been disclosed.
BIA has seen a surge in drug-related arrests in recent weeks. Earlier this month, a foreign national was caught with cocaine concealed inside their body. Customs also intercepted cannabis worth Rs. 113 million hidden in chocolate packaging and 84 mobile phones linked to a Chinese cybercrime operation.
In a separate enforcement action, authorities also seized smuggled medicines worth Rs. 10 million from a passenger arriving from Bangalore, and arrested a suspect attempting to smuggle ornamental plants out of the country.
The pattern of arrests suggests heightened vigilance at BIA, with customs deploying more thorough screening measures amid a broader law enforcement push that includes a 155,000-plant cannabis seizure inside Udawalawe Reserve.
