Police in Nikaweratiya have arrested a United National Party (UNP) local government member accused of forcing his way into a shop and harassing its female owner over the weekend.
According to the Daily Mirror, the suspect — a Pradeshiya Sabha member said to be a resident of Galagedara — pushed his way into the premises and harassed the shopkeeper. Police said he was under the influence of liquor at the time of his arrest.
He has since been charged with misbehaviour by the Nikaweratiya police.
Pradeshiya Sabhas are Sri Lanka’s rural local-government councils, whose members are elected representatives responsible for grassroots administration and public services. Charges of misbehaviour are commonly brought in cases involving disorderly or drunken conduct in public.
Police did not release the suspect’s name, and further details of the incident were not immediately available.
