Seven students have been arrested in connection with an assault on two other students in the Irattaperiyakulam area of Vavuniya, after a video of the attack circulated on social media.

The incident, shared online under the title “Vavuniya Sigithi Pathalaya,” took place near the Irattaperiyakulam tank within the Irattaperiyakulam Police Division. The suspects, aged between 14 and 17, were arrested by officers attached to the Irattaperiyakulam Police Station, Newswire reported.

The two victims, both aged 15, are receiving inpatient treatment at Vavuniya Hospital.

All seven suspects were produced before the Vavuniya Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (June 3). The court ordered they be remanded at the Kebithigollewa Probation and Child Care Centre until June 10, reflecting the juvenile-justice protections required when both suspects and victims are minors.

Irattaperiyakulam Police are conducting further investigations. The case lands amid renewed national attention on child-protection enforcement, after a civil society statement on child protection called for stronger institutional responses to violence involving minors.
