Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath says Sri Lanka is “focused on strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation” with Israel after meeting Israeli Ambassador Reuven Javier Azar, the New Delhi-based envoy accredited to Colombo.

“Focused on strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation across multiple spheres,” Herath said in a statement after the meeting. “Looking forward to continued engagement for mutual benefit.”

The minister did not specify the sectors targeted by the cooperation push. Bilateral engagement between the two countries has historically covered agricultural technology, irrigation, security training and labour migration.

The pledge of expanded ties comes while Israel is conducting a ground invasion and occupation of southern Lebanon. Sri Lanka has not publicly stated a position on the operation. The country has previously welcomed broader West Asia ceasefire steps and joined the Global South Middle East peace coalition.
