Police have arrested a suspect over a robbery targeting a taxi driver in Colombo’s Welikada area after a video of the incident circulated widely on social media.
The robbery took place on May 29, with footage shared extensively online showing an individual allegedly attempting to rob the driver. Officers identified the suspect during investigations and took him into custody.
Police said two investigation teams have been deployed to arrest other individuals believed to be involved in the incident. Further inquiries are continuing. Police have recently highlighted the spread of viral crime footage, issuing warnings about fake social media messages purporting to offer traffic fine payments as part of broader online fraud.
