A woman was struck and killed by a train near the Wellawatte Railway Station on Saturday evening, Wellawatte Police said. An investigation is under way.

The train was travelling from Panadura towards Colombo when the incident occurred within the Wellawatte Police Division, according to Newswire. The deceased was dressed in a white and brown sari and was carrying a green bag, but her identity has not yet been established.

The body has been placed at the Kalubowila Hospital mortuary while Wellawatte Police continue inquiries. No further details on whether the incident occurred at a level crossing, a pedestrian alignment, or the platform area have been released.

The death adds to a difficult month on the Coastal Line and the wider rail network, which has seen multiple service disruptions including a Sagarika derailment near Wadduwa in April and a follow-on Kompannavidiya derailment.
