A suspected associate of a major drug trafficker operating out of Dubai was arrested in Dummaladeniya, Wennappuwa, police said on Monday.
Officers from the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Unit seized narcotics with an estimated street value of Rs. 7.5 million from the suspect at the time of arrest. The operation targeted a key figure in a drug distribution network allegedly linked to a Dubai-based trafficker.
Further investigations are underway to identify other members of the network and trace the supply chain, police said.
The arrest comes during a heightened nationwide anti-drug crackdown over the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festive period, with police conducting islandwide operations targeting drug trafficking networks. More than 520 suspects were arrested in a separate 24-hour operation over the weekend.
