The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the appointment of Wimal S.K. Liyanagama as the new Director General of Sri Lanka Customs, with effect from May 6.
Liyanagama, a Special Grade officer of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service, currently serves as Director General of the Department of Management Services at the Treasury. The proposal for his appointment was presented by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
He succeeds Seevali Arukgoda, who retires from the Customs DG post on May 5. Cabinet Spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa confirmed the appointment to reporters.
The Customs DG sits at the apex of one of Sri Lanka’s largest revenue-collection agencies, responsible for trade enforcement, tariff and tax recovery, and import-control operations under the Customs Ordinance. The role has been at the centre of recent enforcement clusters, including the 13,700 kg turmeric and chilli haul in Kandy and Badulla, a 16-tonne Panwila seizure on May 1, and Customs’ fourth straight monthly revenue target hit in April.
