The Colombo High Court resumed hearing on Monday a Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) case against former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, alleging the unlawful acquisition of assets exceeding Rs. 75 million beyond his declared legal income, Ada Derana reported.
The matter was called before Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihail. Prosecution witnesses gave evidence under the supervision of Additional Solicitor General Azad Navavi, who appeared for the Bribery Commission. Further evidence was postponed to June 25.
The case alleges that Weerawansa committed offences under the Bribery Act by accumulating assets beyond his lawful income between 2010 and 2014, a period covering his tenure in the Mahinda Rajapaksa cabinet.
The hearing adds a fresh accountability date to a docket that has dominated Weerawansa’s recent court appearances. He was arrested on May 25 at the Sri Aviruddha war memorial in Battaramulla over a 2009 protest case, and his National Freedom Front media secretary Prasad Manju was held by the FCID on June 5. A separate Court of Appeal track linked to a 2016 UN office protest case remains scheduled for July 13.
The June 25 date will be the next test of the prosecution’s evidence in the unlawful-assets trial, which carries the largest declared figure of any single CIABOC case currently active against the former minister.
