Former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has been summoned to appear before the commission investigating alleged irregularities in coal procurement, NewsFirst reported.
The commission is examining allegations related to the purchase of coal — a key fuel for Sri Lanka’s largest thermal power station at Norochcholai — and related matters spanning the tenures of successive ministers responsible for the energy and power sectors.
Ranawaka, a prominent figure who has held several cabinet portfolios and led power and energy ministries in past governments, has previously spoken publicly about coal procurement issues and has called for full disclosure of related audit reports.
The summons adds him to the list of former officials called to give evidence as the commission works to establish whether procurement processes were followed and whether the state incurred losses. Coal supply for Norochcholai has been a recurring source of controversy, with past shortages and pricing disputes drawing scrutiny from auditors and parliamentary bodies.
The commission’s findings are expected to feed into decisions on accountability for any lapses identified in the procurement of coal over recent years.
