Water supply to more than 20 areas of Kandy will be suspended for 12 hours today, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., the Kandy Municipal Council has announced.
The interruption is required for urgent electrical maintenance at the Getambe Water Treatment Plant, which is operated by the municipal council.
Areas affected
The suspension covers Dangolla, Medabowala, Sarasavi Uyana, Getambe, Dodamwela, Aniwatte, Bahirawakanda, Asgiriya, Bogambara, Rajapihilla, Ampitiya, Peiriswatta, Boowelikada, Thalwatta, Lewella, Mulgampola, Katukele, Deyyannewela, Suduhumpola, Heerasagala, Hanthana and the Kandy town centre.
Parts of Gurudeniya and Ampitiya that receive water supplied by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board are also affected.
The Municipal Commissioner has advised residents in these areas to store sufficient water in advance to cover the outage.
Context
The Getambe plant is the main source of treated water for Kandy’s municipal area, which means a shutdown there reaches most of the city at once rather than a single suburb. The 12-hour window covers the full working day, and the cut takes in the town centre alongside residential areas on the surrounding hillsides.
Kandy’s supply network has seen repeated interruptions this year. A four-hour cut affected parts of the district on July 22 for maintenance work, and in April the city went through a 10-day outage before supply was restored.
