A 30-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the Galwalayaya area of Thanamalwila on Tuesday night, NewsFirst reported.
The victim is a resident of the same area. Police said the shooting was carried out by an unidentified individual.
He was first admitted to Thanamalwila Hospital and then transferred to Hambantota Hospital for further treatment. Thanamalwila Police are investigating.
Hiru News carried a shorter account confirming a shooting in the same area and that one person was hospitalised with injuries, but without the victim’s age or the transfer. Hiru spells the location Galwalayaaya; NewsFirst gives Galwalayaya.
Context, with a caution
Thanamalwila has appeared in this desk’s reporting repeatedly in recent weeks, and the incidents are unconnected to each other. A resident was arrested with a firearm and ICE at the end of August, and in mid-August two officers were accused of soliciting a bribe during a cannabis raid in the division.
One connection is worth ruling out explicitly. A police sergeant died in Thanamalwila on September 6, three days before this shooting — but that was a motorcycle crash on the Thanamalwila–Hambegamuwa road with no other vehicle involved, not a shooting. The two are not related, and neither outlet suggests otherwise.
