The Police Special Task Force has arrested a man police describe as a close associate of the organised crime figure known as ‘Kalubowila Avishka’, seizing methamphetamine and heroin during a raid on Peiris Mawatha, Kalubowila, NewsFirst reported.
Acting on a tip-off, officers recovered 2kg 10g of ‘ice’ (methamphetamine) and 504g of heroin, along with two mobile phones, an electronic weighing scale and two rubber seals. The suspect is a 33-year-old resident of Kirulapone, Colombo 05. He has been handed to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigation.
Police said their investigation found the man was managing the local drug network of ‘Kalubowila Avishka’, whom NewsFirst describes as an organised criminal and large-scale trafficker.
Where he sits in the chain
Hiru News, which reported the same arrest, adds a link NewsFirst does not: ‘Kalubowila Avishka’ is said to run the trafficking operations of a larger figure known as ‘Kos Malli’. That places the man arrested on Tuesday three steps down a chain rather than at its head — an assistant to a manager, not a principal.
Neither outlet says whether ‘Kalubowila Avishka’ or ‘Kos Malli’ is in custody, at large, or abroad.
The two accounts differ on location and value, but the weight reconciles
The reports are not identical and the differences are worth stating plainly.
Weight. NewsFirst itemises 2kg 10g of ice plus 504g of heroin — 2,514g in total. Hiru gives a single figure of “2 kilograms and 500 grams.” These are the same seizure rounded differently, not a discrepancy.
Valuation. NewsFirst puts the haul at over Rs. 25 million; Hiru at around Rs. 20 million. Neither states a per-gram rate or says whether the figure covers both substances, so the Rs. 5 million gap cannot be reconciled from the reporting.
Location. NewsFirst places the raid on Peiris Mawatha, Kalubowila, and separately gives Kirulapone as the suspect’s home address. Hiru says the arrest was made “in the Kirulapone area.” The likeliest reading is that Hiru has given the suspect’s residence rather than the site of the raid — Kalubowila and Kirulapone are adjacent in the Colombo suburbs — but neither outlet addresses the point.
A second Avishka, or the same one?
This publication’s archive carries a ‘Kudu Avishka’, named by the Police Spokesman last week when a grenade was thrown at a house on Wimalasiri Mawatha, Kohuwala in what police called a feud between rival criminal factions. Kohuwala, Kalubowila and Kirulapone all fall within the same stretch of the Dehiwala–Mount Lavinia and Colombo 05 suburbs, and both aliases attach to organised drug trafficking.
No source links the two names, and this article does not assume they are the same person. Sri Lankan underworld aliases are frequently place-based and frequently duplicated; the question is left open here because no outlet has answered it.
Context
The arrest lands in a run of enforcement activity against organised drug networks in greater Colombo. Police have recorded four grenade attacks in 45 days attributed to underworld rivalry, and the President said last week there would be no pardon for underworld figures. Tuesday also brought a separate and much larger find, with two bags holding Rs. 320 million of Kush abandoned at Bandaranaike International Airport.

Neither outlet names the suspect, gives the date or time of the raid, or says whether he has been produced before a magistrate. Neither explains what the two rubber seals were for — ordinarily an indicator of branded repackaging for onward sale — or whether the phones have yielded anything. No arrest of ‘Kalubowila Avishka’ or ‘Kos Malli’ is reported, and no further arrests are mentioned.
