A three-wheeler driver was killed on the spot on Wednesday evening after his vehicle collided with the Maradana–Hikkaduwa Office Express train at a railway crossing on Depot Road, Aluthgama, Ada Derana reported.
Police said the three-wheeler was travelling from Dharga Town towards Aluthgama at the time of the accident. Preliminary investigations indicated that the driver attempted to cross the railway line carelessly. Only the driver was inside the vehicle.
The identity of the deceased had not been confirmed at the time of reporting. Aluthgama Police are conducting further investigations.
The fatality is the second train–three-wheeler collision on the western coastal corridor in 48 hours, following the Chilaw–Colombo Fort train collision at a Kapuwatta–Kandana level crossing on Tuesday morning that killed two people. Unmanned level crossings remain a recurring fatal-accident concern across Sri Lanka’s rail network.
