The Department of Meteorology has issued a fresh Amber advisory for strong winds across the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Northern and North-Central provinces and the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts, extending the alert window that lapsed on Thursday.

The advisory was issued on Thursday (4) and remains in effect until 3.30 p.m. on Friday (5), the department said.

Strong winds of about 40–50 kmph can be expected at times over the affected provinces and the two coastal districts due to the active south-west monsoonal condition, the department said. Fairly strong winds of about 30–40 kmph can be expected at times elsewhere on the island.

The new alert continues the run of monsoon-driven wind advisories that have rolled through the island over the past two weeks, including the Amber advisory issued on June 3 that expired on Thursday and earlier rough-seas and strong-wind alerts in late May. The Met Department asked the public to remain attentive to further advisories.
