The Department of Meteorology has issued a fresh Amber advisory for strong winds of about 40-50 kmph over the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Northern and North-Central provinces and in the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts due to the active south-west monsoonal condition, Ada Derana reported.

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can also be expected at times elsewhere on the island. The advisory, issued at 3.30 p.m. on Monday (8), will remain in effect until 3.30 p.m. on Tuesday (9).

The Met Department warned that the strong winds could cause damage to roof tiles and sheets, power and communication lines, breaking of tree branches and uprooting of large trees, damage to paddy crops, banana, papaya trees and orchards, damage to harbour yachts, and sea-water inundation in low-lying areas near the coast. The public has been urged to remain vigilant and to contact local Disaster Management Authority units for emergency assistance.

The new alert continues a rolling run of monsoon-driven wind advisories that have covered the same provinces and coastal districts over the past two weeks, including the Amber advisory extended through Friday afternoon and the earlier June 3 advisory. The advisory is separate from the marine and rainfall warnings issued for Sunday, which covered heavy falls above 100mm and gusts up to 70 kmph at sea.
