Two young men were killed and another injured when a truck collided with a three-wheeler near the Tractor Junction in Ampara, police said. One of the youths died at the scene, while the second died after being admitted to the Ampara Hospital, where the injured passenger is also receiving treatment.
The deceased, aged 23 and 24, were residents of the Dadayantalawa and Navagampura areas. The driver of the truck has been arrested over the crash.
In a separate incident, a pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle travelling towards Galle near the Yalegama Junction in Kosgoda, on the Galle-Colombo main road. Police said the pedestrian sustained critical injuries and was already dead by the time he reached the Balapitiya Hospital. His identity had not been confirmed.
The fatalities add to a sustained run of road-safety incidents on Sri Lanka’s highways, following a multi-vehicle pile-up at Eheliyagoda that injured ten and a bus collision at Naula earlier in the cycle. Road deaths spiked sharply over the Avurudu travel season in April, prompting renewed enforcement calls from transport authorities.
