Ten people were injured in a multi-vehicle collision in Eheliyagoda on Tuesday evening after a car lost control and crashed into a line of vehicles on the Colombo-Ratnapura route.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m., involving a motorcycle, three three-wheelers, and two cars that collided following the initial impact. All ten injured individuals were admitted to Eheliyagoda Hospital for treatment.
The accident adds to a grim toll of road casualties during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year holiday period. At least 49 people were killed in road accidents in the week surrounding the holiday, prompting police to deploy 8,000 officers for traffic management and activate expressway CCTV monitoring.
Eheliyagoda, located in Sabaragamuwa Province, lies on a key route between Colombo and the hill country that sees heavy traffic during the Avurudu return rush. Transport authorities had deployed 1,500 additional buses and trains to manage the holiday travel surge.
