A two-year-and-two-month-old child from Unuwinna has died after a car attempting to overtake another vehicle struck a three-wheeler head-on along the Talatuoya–Ragala road in the Mailapitiya area, NewsFirst reported.
Police said the three-wheeler was travelling in the opposite direction when the car crossed into its lane during the overtaking manoeuvre. The driver of the three-wheeler, his spouse and their young child were rushed to Hanguranketha Hospital with serious injuries. The child later succumbed to injuries despite medical efforts.
The driver of the car has been taken into custody. An investigation is underway.
The incident comes amid sustained warnings about road safety following Vesak weekend, when 24 people died across 19 separate accidents in three days, and continuing concern over three-wheeler collisions on rural roads.
