The bodies of a 55-year-old woman and her 61-year-old husband were discovered inside a clothing store in Bulathsinhala on Sunday, police said, with the cause of death yet to be determined.
Officers from the Bulathsinhala Police Station, acting on information received, rushed to the location and recovered the bodies during the initial inspection, according to Ada Derana. Police have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine whether the deaths were a murder or resulted from other circumstances.
No further details were released on Sunday evening, including how the couple were discovered, who alerted police, or whether the store was open at the time. A judicial medical officer’s report on the cause of death is typically required before investigators can formally classify the case.
The discovery follows a series of incidents involving couples found dead at family-owned premises this year. In May, Hatton Police launched a homicide probe after an elderly couple, both 82, were found murdered inside their shop in Dikoya with injuries consistent with a sharp-weapon attack. A separate domestic-violence case last week saw a Bingiriya woman killed and her husband found dead at the scene in Kurunegala, with police treating it as a suspected murder–suicide.
Bulathsinhala, in the Kalutara District, falls under the same provincial policing area as several similar incidents this year and sits in a region the irrigation department has flagged for minor flood conditions in the Kalu Ganga and Attanagalu Oya basins over the weekend.
