Sri Lanka has recorded 28,713 dengue cases so far in 2026 along with 15 dengue-related deaths, Community Medical Specialist at the National Dengue Control Unit Dr. Prasheela Samaraweera said.

The figure marks an increase of about 959 cases over the 27,754 total reported on May 11, when the NDCU identified 42 high-risk zones across the island. The new tally is roughly in line with previous projections that the south-west monsoon would drive a sustained climb in cases through May and June.

Dr. Samaraweera again urged the public to inspect premises weekly and eliminate mosquito breeding sites. The Aedes mosquito that transmits dengue breeds in stagnant water collected in containers, tyres, rooftop gutters and construction-site debris.

The increase comes as the Met Department forecasts further showers across the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Northern provinces along with Galle and Matara districts in the coming days, conditions that typically expand breeding-site availability. Active eradication drives have been running in 43 high-risk divisions since early May, and seven districts have been on heightened watch since April.

Health authorities have urged residents to seek prompt medical attention for unexplained fever, severe headache, joint pain or rash — particularly during the typical day-three to day-six window when complications including dengue haemorrhagic fever can emerge.
