Police have launched an investigation into a double death reported from a residence in the Nikadhalupotha area within the Wellawa Police Division, Newswire reported on Sunday.
Officers said a 49-year-old woman was found dead at the scene with injuries from a sharp weapon, while a 40-year-old man was later found dead by hanging inside the same house. Both were residents of the area.
Preliminary investigations suggest a dispute between the two had escalated, leading to the fatal attack on the woman followed by the man’s suspected suicide. Wellawa Police are continuing further inquiries.
The case adds to a series of domestic violence incidents that have surfaced across the country in recent weeks, including a father-daughter killing in Kalutara earlier this month. Authorities have repeatedly flagged the need to expand counselling and protection services for at-risk households as cases of fatal intra-family violence continue to be reported.
