The Officer-in-Charge of the Eheliyagoda Police Station has been arrested by the Ratnapura Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau over alleged misconduct in a gemstone theft investigation, Ada Derana reported.

Police said the arrest, made on Tuesday, followed a complaint to the National Police Commission alleging that the OIC had acted unlawfully during the investigation of a gemstone theft report. He is said to have forcibly taken money belonging to witnesses and suspects connected to the case and to have failed to produce it to investigating officers.

The Ratnapura DCIB is conducting further inquiries.

The OIC was produced before court later on Thursday and released on bail, Ada Derana reported in a follow-up update.

The arrest comes as the National Police Commission’s term has lapsed with the body continuing in place pending fresh appointments, and follows other recent disciplinary cases such as the Peliyagoda CIABOC arrest and the Teldeniya assault arrests.
