Eravur Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with the death of his 11-year-old sister, who was found inside a water tank at the family home on May 28.

Police identified the victim as Sathyananthan Sadeesha. Investigators say a quarrel had broken out between the siblings over a mobile phone before the incident. The children’s mother is employed overseas and their father was away at work on the day.

The father returned home to search for his children and found his daughter unconscious inside the bathroom water tank. She was taken to hospital where doctors pronounced her dead. The boy is believed to have left for a neighbouring house after the incident.

The teenager allegedly admitted involvement during questioning and has been taken into custody pending production before court. Investigations continue. The Eravur area has seen a number of cases reaching courts in recent months, including an Eravur motorcyclist remanded after a viral video of helmet-less riding earlier this year. Police have also been investigating a hotel fire in Batticaloa that killed two children.
