A 59-year-old man accused of impersonating a doctor has been arrested in Polonnaruwa for alleged involvement in a series of offences, the Polonnaruwa Division Crime Investigation Unit confirmed.
The suspect, a resident of Pannala in Kurunegala, was taken into custody near Deepa Uyana in Polonnaruwa on Tuesday night. Police said he had previously been arrested by the Borella, Kandy, Minuwangoda and Divulapitiya police stations in connection with various offences and had served a two-year prison term.
A stethoscope, a doctor’s uniform, a forged identity card and several other items were seized from him at the time of arrest. Police said he had impersonated a doctor working at the maternity ward of Hingurakgoda Hospital, deceiving members of the public with the forged credentials.
The suspect was scheduled to be produced before the Polonnaruwa Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
The arrest follows a series of recent enforcement actions involving impersonation, including a man arrested last month for posing as the Prime Minister’s secretary’s spouse, and ongoing concerns over unregulated practitioners in rural districts.
