Two Gateway College Colombo swimmers, Lithum De Silva and Hashel Senarath, have been selected to represent Sri Lanka at the 12th Asian Age Group Swimming Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, from July 17 to 21.
Their selection followed three days of national trials organised by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool Complex from May 8 to 10.
In the Under-19 category, Lithum De Silva qualified for the 200m Freestyle and both the 4×100m and 4×200m Freestyle relays. His standout performance came in the 200m Freestyle, where he clocked 1:57.80 and earned 649 World Aquatics points. It will be Lithum’s second appearance at the Asian Age Group Championships, having represented Sri Lanka at the 2024 edition.
Hashel Senarath, competing in the Under-15 category, earned selection across the 50m, 100m and 200m Butterfly events as well as multiple relays. His 200m Butterfly time of 2:16.78 broke the Sri Lanka Junior National Record. Bangkok will be his first international competition.
The Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union is the national governing body affiliated with World Aquatics and the Asia Aquatics, and oversees age-group team selection for international meets.
Their qualification adds to a sporting week that also saw the Sri Lanka women’s T20 World Cup squad confirmed for England and follows recent diplomatic engagement to expand Sri Lanka–New Zealand cricket cooperation.
