Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa says the government is reviewing requests from a range of professions seeking a revision of the retirement age, and will take a decision after careful consideration.
Speaking to reporters after opening a new kidney stone treatment unit at the Mirigama Hospital on Sunday (July 12), the minister said several professional groups had submitted appeals to extend the age of retirement, arguing that they remain able to carry out their duties for a longer period.
Among those who have made requests, Jayatissa said, are members of the judiciary — including officials serving in the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and High Court — as well as certain health-sector professionals and officers of the Department of Prisons. Other professional groups have expressed similar views, he added.
The minister acknowledged that opinions on the matter differ, but said the government would weigh all the requests received before reaching a decision.
The retirement age of judges has been a live issue in recent months, with the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and others pressing for a constitutional amendment as the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal grapple with vacancies.
