International Cricket Council Chairman Jay Shah arrived in Colombo on Friday and met President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, with the disputed Sri Lanka Cricket interim administration the centrepiece of discussions, multiple Sri Lankan newsrooms reported.

Shah, who also serves as the head of the Asian Cricket Council, travelled to Colombo on the inaugural FitsAir Ahmedabad–Colombo direct flight that launched the same morning, NewsFirst reported. The whistle-stop visit caps months of ICC engagement with Sri Lankan authorities over the country’s cricket-governance arrangement.

Sri Lanka Cricket has been operating under an interim administrative structure since the Sports Ministry took control of the board last year, an intervention the ICC has flagged as raising compliance questions under its rules barring government interference. An ICC and BCCI delegation visited Colombo in May for preliminary discussions, and ICC officials met President Dissanayake days later. The interim committee was established in March to drive governance reforms and address Sri Lanka’s poor Test results.

Newswire said the agenda focused on the interim arrangement and “the way forward for the sport’s governance in the country.” Neither the ICC nor the President’s office issued a formal statement at the time of publication.

Indian media reported earlier in the day that Shah met Sri Lankan cricket great Sanath Jayasuriya in Ahmedabad at the FitsAir route inauguration event, before flying to Colombo. Jayasuriya resigned in May as Sri Lanka Cricket’s high-performance consultant over governance disagreements.

Shah, son of Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, is the youngest chairman in ICC history and previously served as BCCI honorary secretary.

Update — June 19 evening: meeting confirmed, ICC letter to SLC CEO surfaces

Ada Derana and Newswire confirmed in the evening that the meeting had taken place at the Presidential Office. Ada Derana reported that the ICC sent a letter to SLC chief executive Ashley de Silva last week — the contents have not been made public, but the world governing body is understood to have insisted on holding democratic elections without delay to run SLC affairs. The interim committee, by contrast, had expected the ICC to grant it indefinite time to implement reforms, including the formulation of a new constitution. The body replaces an executive committee elected in 2025 and headed by four-time SLC president Shammi Silva, whose term was scheduled to run until May 2027 before he and his entire committee resigned in April after the government intervened.

Update — June 19 night: SLC briefs ICC on governance roadmap

NewsFirst reported later in the evening that Sri Lanka Cricket separately held high-level discussions with the visiting delegation, which included not only ICC Chairman Jay Shah but also Board of Control for Cricket in India Secretary Devajit Saikia, on the country’s cricket administration reforms. The meeting, described as “cordial and constructive”, centred on the work of the interim committee and the steps being taken to strengthen administrative structures and improve transparency.

SLC briefed the delegation on the constitutional and administrative changes underway, and shared indicative timelines for the transition back to a duly elected administration in line with the applicable legal and constitutional framework. Shah welcomed the update and reaffirmed the ICC’s commitment to supporting member boards in promoting strong governance practices.

Update — June 20: AKD posts presidential readout

President Dissanayake confirmed the meeting in his own statement on Saturday. “Met @ICC Chairman @JayShah at the Presidential Secretariat this afternoon for a discussion on matters of mutual interest, including the continued development of cricket and sports in Sri Lanka,” he posted, EconomyNext reported. The government has insisted that the interim cricket council established in April after Shammi Silva’s executive committee resignation is a temporary measure leading to constitutional reform — a framing the ICC has historically resisted, having suspended Sri Lanka in the past for similar moves.
