A 27-year-old motorcyclist died on Sunday after a road accident near the Bathgamgoda Junction on the Ratnapura–Balangoda main road, police said.

According to Pelmadulla Police, the motorcycle was travelling from Balangoda towards Pelmadulla when the rider lost control of the vehicle, veered off the roadway and collided with a roadside electricity pole. The rider sustained critical injuries in the crash and was rushed to Kahawatta Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The deceased has been identified as a resident of Pelmadulla. Pelmadulla Police are conducting further investigations to determine the exact circumstances leading to the crash.

The fatality is the latest in a string of single-vehicle deaths on Sri Lanka’s hill-country roads in recent days, including a 15-year-old who drowned at Ma Oya in Mawanella and a Mawanella driving-lesson accident in which an 86-year-old was killed by his own car. The cluster comes as Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake presses a target to significantly reduce road deaths by 2029.
