Police have arrested a young couple in the 28th Mile Post area of Polonnaruwa for allegedly transporting crystal methamphetamine, known as “Ice,” in a vehicle.

The suspects, aged 24 and 22 and residents of Katana and Kuliyapitiya, were detained during a raid by the Polonnaruwa Anti-Corruption Unit acting on a tip-off, police said. Officers recovered 27 grams of Ice from the male suspect and a further 6,310 milligrams from the female suspect — together about 33 grams of the drug.

The luxury vehicle believed to have been used to transport the narcotics was also taken into custody. The suspects, along with the seized drugs and the vehicle, were due to be produced before the Polonnaruwa Magistrate’s Court.

The arrest is the latest in a sustained police crackdown on Ice trafficking, which has seen a string of drug seizures and arrests across the country in recent weeks as authorities target the distribution of crystal methamphetamine.
